2009 News Clips: By Mark Dewar (Associate Sports Editor, SUN Publications) July 15, 2009 All-SUN Softball Selections Kellie White St. Thomas Aquinas The Saints ace, a junior and Class 5A second-team all-state honoree, compiled a 9-2 record and completed nine of her 12 starts. In 75 innings, the first-team All-East Kansas Leaguer fanned 85 of the 310 hitters she faced, walked only 11, allowed just 10 earned runs and boasted a 0.93 earned run average. "Kellie was our No. 1 pitcher on staff and faced each team's No. 1 pitcher of every doubleheader," St. Thomas Aquinas coach Chris Orel said. "Her pitching toughness was a huge reason for our success this season." In an East Kansas League game April 15, the junior worked all 10 innings in a 1-0 victory over Blue Valley Northwest. She scattered six hits, fanned nine and did not walk a batter. In the three games she has pitched this season, she has not allowed an earned run. She has faced 83 batters, allowed 12 hits, struck out 30 and just walked three. Junior pitcher Kellie White has a 0.72 ERA and earned all-state honors last season, while senior third baseman Ashley Dobbie, senior outfielder Janessa Swinney, senior catcher/second baseman Cayce Jacquinot and junior shortstop Ellen Drummond return to form a talented nucleus. She fanned 19 and walked only three. The Saints defense only committed one error in the course of three games. "There wasn't anybody else we would have gone to for this game." As a result, St. Thomas Aquinas is advancing to today’s semifinal round after a 2-1 victory over the No. 3 seeded Cougars at Two Rivers Park. White retired the first 10 hitters she faced. She ended up surrendering just three hits, while striking out five. “Here’s what’s so sweet about that,” said Christine Orel, the Aquinas coach. “We came down here expecting to face the best pitcher in 5A. The way Kellie pitched tonight, I beg to differ.”
